A Trauma Survivors Podcast on Mental Health

A Podcast on Mental Health

On A Trauma Survivor Thriver’s Podcast with Lorilee Binstock, we share experiences as trauma survivors and our journeys to recovery. We also discuss ways to dismantle the stigma around mental illness to promote mental wellness and healing. After being featured on the March edition of Authentic Insider Magazine, I was invited on Fireside Chat for another interview to share my story of overcoming trauma.

Healing From Trauma

During the interview, I shared the last traumatic physical altercation between my mother and father. As I got older I found myself in situations like that and was so confused about what love is. I wondered how can someone behave this way? I found myself going through this journey of finding myself in helpless situations and I had to choose better.

The host asked how do you get out of those traumatic situations? How do you move through that?

It’s a process, I found that I had to get to a place where I wanted a life that is different. I was seeing myself living and not thriving. I was living in depression, anxiety, and impulsiveness. We all have different coping skills. I went through a work-mode of working my life to death to numb my pain. I went through an episode where I just wanted to sleep the pain away. There was never drugs or alchohol but I found myself trying to always seek validation and acceptance from men in my life. Even if they brought dissrespectfulness, emotional abuse or physical abuse, I just did not want to feel alone. I had to choose to take a really hard look at myself, accept the broken foundation and ask why I was repeating these cycles. I had to learn to find self-love and accept me for who I am. I am a genuine, kind person. I can be crazy, but at the same time I had to stop looking for validation.

Self-Love Is Your Biggest Gift

Once I gave myself that biggest gift and started to love me for me, I started really changing my whole life. Choosing better coping skills, building my support system, and strengthening it. I have always had that relationship with God. I have an amazing Amazon playlist with different inspirational songs, quotes and talks. I do my nature walks and just talk to God and express gratitude while letting him know my worries, my stresses and my concerns. This is what works for me.

Changes do happen and we have to learn to adjust with it. We have to learn to go with the changes in our life.” ~ K.I.M

It’s definately been a process but it’s also been a blessing and such a rewarding journey to be able to inspire and be so transparent to help someone else to heal. Click here to listen to the interview on Stitcher.
